Do You Really Have Carpel Tunnel: What You Need to Know

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – a term often heard but not always well understood. Carple Tunnel can manifest itself as tingling or numbness in your hand and wrist.

In this Blog I want to explore what is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and discuss what else it could REALLY be.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Anatomy of Carpal Tunnel

The Carpal Tunnel is a narrow passageway in the wrist, through which the Median Nerve and tendons pass. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the Median Nerve, which controls sensations to the palm and fingers, becomes compressed at the wrist. HOWEVER, the Median Nerve that passes through the Carpal Tunnel starts at a much higher point within the body within the neck and is called the Brachial Plexus Nerve.

The Brachial Plexus Nerve

Why is the Brachial Plexus Nerve important? Well, the Brachial Plexus Nerve too passes through multiple small structures within the neck and shoulders before it begins its journey down the arm and into the hand. If the Brachial Plexus Nerve becomes trapped or impinged further up the line, it can too manifest itself as numbness, pain or tingling within the hand. Many people find that a diagnoses of Carpal Tunnel can actually be due to an impingement much higher up. Consider to yourself if your impingement could actually be from the Brachial Plexus; do you struggle with neck or shoulder pain? Could your posture be the cause of your symptoms? Do you think repetitive movement from your shoulder is more likely to be the cause? If the answer is YES then Sports Massage can help.
