Some simple stretches of the trapezius can help relive tension in the neck and upper back, it can even help relive headaches. Practice the following stretches daily for a couple of weeks and see if it can help relive your tension:
Simple neck stretch - sitting
While sitting on a chair, cross your arms over and hang on the chair between your legs, let your head fall forwards and then lean backwards.
This is beneficial if you take part in sports such as; rugby, cycling and swimming, or if you suffer with neck muscle strain.
Wrap around shoulder stretch (aka give yourself a big hug!)
Stand upright and wrap your arms around your shoulders as if hugging yourself, pull your shoulders back.
This is beneficial if you take part in sports such as cricket, golf, tennis, squash, rowing and swimming, or if your suffer with rotator cuff injuries.
Reaching forward upper back stretch
Stand with your arms out in front and crossed over, push your hands forwards as far as possible and let your head fall forward.
This is beneficial if you take part in sports such as cycling, golf, tennis, badminton or kayaking, or if you suffer with neck muscle strain and upper back strain.
Remember never overstretch by forcing movement; instead remember to relax!
